History Lesson
Halloween dates back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samahain. The Celts who lived in the area which is now known as Ireland, celebrated their new year in November. Halloween was celebrated on October 31, the day which marked the end of summer and harvest with the beginning of a cold, dark winter. The Celts believed that on the new year's night the boundary between the world of the living and the world of the death became obnubilated. This helped the dead to return to Earth and cause trouble, damaging crops and human death. The people visited the 'Druids' or Celtic priest to make predictions about the future and carry out religious rituals. The Druids built large bonfires and burned crops and animals on the sacred pyres. The Celts wore costumes made of animal hides and skins and celebrated the day. In the 800 AD, Christianity had spread to the Celtic lands.

During the 7th century, Pope Boniface IV declared 1st November as All Saints' Day to honor saints and martyrs. The festival was called 'All-hallows and the night before it as All-hallows eve. A thousand years later, the Church declared 2nd November as the 'All Souls' Day'. Thus, the Halloween night came to be celebrated with big bonfires, parades and people dressed in Halloween costumes like angels, saints and the devil.
