How to Hide Ear Gauges

The popularity of gauged ears is picking up like wildfire. These days, 8 out of 10 people have pierced ears, and out of those, at least 3 to 4 people have gauged ears. Regardless of what our culture and society thinks about this kind of body modification, there are many teens and 20 something adults who are opting for them. Apart from getting other types of body modifications like tattoos and various piercings on their bodies, ear gauging has also become quite famous all over the world.

Whether or not the majority of people approve of the idea of using a piece of jewelry to stretch the earlobes, this trend is here to stay for a long time. With different gauge sizes available, you can opt to stretch your earlobes as big as you want. Perceived as a sign of individualism and freedom of expression, more and more people are looking to get various sizes of the gauges for themselves. You too can get your ears gauged if you are an adult (18 years old or over). However, if you are a minor, I do advice you to get parental consent before you get one for yourself. Now, even though ear gauging is the latest trend, it looks cool, and expresses your individuality, there are times where this body modification may not be accepted with open arms. Our article today, discusses this issue, and also gives tips to hide your gauges, if you happen to be in that situation.

Why Hide Your Gauges

Regardless of ear gauging being popular among the new generation, there are times when they may not be accepted. Besides the frowns from the strangers and wide eyes gawking you everywhere you go, ear gauges can pose as an issue at your work. In organizations where an employee's personal appearance is given a lot of weight, these gauges might not be allowed. Whenever an employee (especially in the customer service industry) makes visual choices such as his / her clothes (if there is no strict dress code), hair, grooming, and even accessories (rings, bracelets, earrings, etc.), it reflects on the company / organization he / she works for. In such cases, customers associate the employee's appearance as the organizations' ideologies as well. And if more and more consumers are turned off by the ear gauges, it could mean that they will limit or even stop visiting the store or office. Hence, it can pose as an issue for you, your job security, and your employer too.

How to Hide Your Gauges

If you have already gotten your ears gauged or are planning on gauging your ears, then perhaps you should know how to hide the gauges. Who knows, perhaps you might need to hide them, for whatever reasons. Besides the reasons I mentioned above, I really can't think of any other grounds why someone would look to hide their ear gauge. Well, whatever your reasons may be, the following steps should come in handy.
  • First of all, you need to purchase a skin-colored or clear plastic hole protector. They are more commonly known as retainers for your gauged ears.
  • They are like plugs which can be placed in the hole created by the jewelry. This way, if the hole isn't too big, people will rarely notice it; only if they are staring right at it.
  • Make sure the clear plastic plug is the same size as the jewelry. A good way to be sure is to visit the piercer who did the gauging for you in the first place.
  • The second thing you can do along with wearing the clear plastic plugs is to style your hair in such a way that your earlobes aren't clearly visible.
  • And finally, if you don't wish to go through the hassle of purchasing the clear plastic plugs, or can't style your hair to hide the gauge, you can always wrap a layer of tape around the jewelry.
Apart from using plugs / protector, many people suggest using tapers. Avoid it at all costs because they are clearly visible. Use the clear plugs instead. Hiding your gauged ears isn't really difficult. Just use the clear plastic plugs and you'll be fine. All the best.
