Medical estheticians are people concerned with maintaining and improving the look of patients, who have received trauma or injury to their skin. Their jobs differ from other estheticians' in the sense that they work in a medical setting with patients who have experienced trauma to the skin during a medical procedure, or whose skin have been affected by accident and major illnesses. They are basically skin care specialists with a license to practice skin care. Medical Esthetician Job Description

A medical esthetician is a person who works in a medical setting with patients receiving significant injury to the skin. She is responsible for providing skin care facilities to such individuals to improve their appearance. She has to analyze the skin or the skin condition of patients. In patients of cosmetic procedure, they are responsible for giving special massage and skin treatment to reduce the bruising.

She can give skin treatments like, chemical peel, dermabrasion, microdermabrasions and laser therapy, depending on the type and extent of the trauma or injury to the skin. At times, estheticians have to inform their patients about facial skin care techniques like, massage and also about some cosmetics that can be used at home for proper skin care. Along with treating skin problems, she is often required to understand the psychological issues that some patients of skin disorders can have. They may need to boost the morale of such patients, and consider their needs while treating the specific skin problems.

Requirements
She is required to have specialized skills and knowledge in skin care and cosmetology. She needs to have adequate knowledge about skin analysis, skin treatment, massage, makeup application, cosmetics, use of anesthesia and hair removal. All these courses are usually included in their training and education programs. Basically, one needs to complete a program in cosmetology to obtain this job.

One needs to complete a high school diploma or a general education degree (GED) or its equivalence, and then earn a degree in cosmetology. The next step is to acquire practical knowledge in this field and so, after earning a degree in cosmetology, one needs to complete about 600 hours of training from a school approved by the state agency. After completing the training program, one has to pass the written and practical examinations conducted by the state cosmetology board.

Salary
Compared to other estheticians, she can earn a much higher salary. Like any other profession, salary of an esthetician can be influenced by factors like, the type of employer, years of experience and the industry in which one is working. Those working in plastic surgery industry are likely to get better pay scale. On an average, she can earn a salary of $40,000 per annum. The usual salary range can be about $25,000 to $45,000. Along with salary, someone working in this field may earn commission, which can increase with the years of experience. Many medical estheticians can also earn commissions on skin care products that they sell to their customers.

Besides getting a job in skin care clinics or medical spas, she can opt to practice privately. The key to achieve success in this profession is to keep oneself abreast of the latest developments in cosmetology and skin care.
