Checklist for Moving into an Apartment
Moving into a new apartment is certainly exciting, but it also demands a lot of work. It requires you to organize moving into a new apartment as well as organize getting the current apartment back into shape. You will have to plan to ensure all your belongings go into the new apartment and there is no loss either due to misplacement or due to breakage. Let's see the points to remember when you are moving into an apartment. Using these points will make moving a cakewalk.
Checklist for Moving into First Apartment
Using the checklist for moving into an apartment will help you to reduce stress and also keep a track of all the loose ends. At the same time, you will have to stay calm, as if you get nervous or worked up, things will not be in place as you expect them to be. You will have to make certain decisions when you are moving an apartment.
Create a Moving Handbook
First and foremost create a moving handbook or a binder or folder. You will have to place all the estimates, receipts, inventory lists, etc. in it. At the same time, make a note of all the important phone numbers in the same. Whenever you need the numbers associated with moving, you will be able to find them easily and you won't have to go hunting for them again and again. You can also make a moving checklist template, which may make dealing with things easier.
Moving Yourself or Hiring a Moving Company
Now decide whether you are going to move all by yourself or are you going to hire a moving company. If you are going to hire a moving company, then you will have to undertake some research to find out which of the moving companies is ready to give you a better deal. On the other hand if you are moving yourself, you will have to hire a vehicle to move your belongings. If you are moving long distance, then you may have to make arrangements for auto shipping.
Segregate your Belongings
Segregate your belongings to decide all that you are going to move to the new apartment. The belongings which are damaged can be piled up together for disposal late on. If there are some items, which are good but you would not want them now, you can either donate them or sell them in a garage sell.
Organize all Records and Schedule Transfer of Records
Records like medical records, dental records, insurance records, etc. all need to be organized. If you are planning to move into the same locality as you presently reside, then you may not have to make too many changes, however, if you are moving to a different locality all together, then you will have to arrange for transfer of records.
Schedule Moving of Utilities
Moving utilities is one of the most important parts of moving into an apartment. Arrange for moving utilities like phone, Internet, cable, gas connection, electric connection into the new apartment you are moving into. These should not be arranged way in advance of you moving, lest you have to bear with the inconvenience till you do not move out of the apartment into the new one.
Intimation about Change in Address
This is an important item in the checklist when one is moving out on his own. You will have to fill in the Change in Address form either at a post office or on line. Similarly, you will have to intimate other places about your change in address. Employers, family and friends, attorney, accountant, etc. are some of the people whom you would want to intimate about the change in address. Other than this you may also want to notify your insurance and credit card company about your scheduled change of address. The change in address will also have to be notified for the pension plans, magazines to which you have subscribed to, licenses, memberships, etc.
Payments
If you have automated payment plans, you will have to cancel them with the bank. At the same time make arrangements for setting up the automated payment plans for the new apartment you are shifting into.
Cleaning and Packing
You will have to start cleaning the apartment you currently reside in. As you clean the apartment, do pack your belongings. You can use some apartment cleaning tips when you are cleaning the apartment. When you are packing mark the items, which you would want to carry yourself. Pack them and mark them accordingly, so that you do not lose any precious items. If you can dismantle the furniture, you may want to dismantle it, so that it is easy for you to transport it.
Packing Items
You will need to have the packing items in place. Like screwdrivers, wrench, pliers, tape, etc. These will also help you, when you in the new house, when you have to arrange all the stuff.
Along with the checklist, you may also need help while moving. Handover certain tasks to your help as well, as it will help you in reducing some burden off you. Always shift in one day prior into the new house before expiry of the lease on the old house, so that you have time to check the old house once again for anything, that you may have left behind.
