Off the Shoulder Dress
The off shoulder dresses first made their appearance during the early 1550s in the form of Tudor gowns, which was not exactly like the modern version of the off the shoulder dress. Instead the Tudor gown had long sleeves that reached till the wrists, but they just about managed to begin their decent from the very edge of the shoulders. This design created quite the stir in the so-called conservative French society, it was initially dawned only by aristocratic women who had a pedigree and a taste for high fashion and class. Though soon enough, this fashion trend spread like wildfire and went on to become a fairly common sight among ladies from all sects of society.
The off shoulder dresses has evolved much, and has somehow remained a yet still classic and sensual garment. Every century since then has seen its likes in one variation or the other, but it became main stream only during the 19th century, when women gained more freedom and security to express their independent and strong personalities through the dresses they wore. During the 'Flower Era' or the age of the Hippies, the off shoulder dress and the bell bottoms gained popularity unlike any other period. The dress had its own point to prove for the freedom it offered from rules and regulations, so to speak metaphorically. This is also the time when the off shoulder mini dress was introduced, and its appeal affected youngsters and adults, much like a sonic boom!
Bringing you back to modern times, off shoulder dresses are today a necessity of every women's wardrobe. Forget about all the stuff you might have read, about only women with specific body type can carry this style off. Pay no heed to bad rubbish! Here are some of the patterns that are a hot favorite these days.
One Shoulder Off Tops
The fact is that, off shoulder dresses come in a variety of patterns, and it depends on you as to what you believe looks and feels good on you. One huge benefit of these dresses is that they fall from the shoulder, which allows the entire shoulder line to look more slender than if you were wearing a sleeveless or a halter necked top. Women who are broad-shouldered or a bit chubby, can try the one shoulder off dress, which have sleeves that cover the elbows and further on both arms. Also try plain colors and avoid prints, as the overall effect will give a sleeker and more toned look. Baggy off the shoulder shirts and dress tops also help hide bulges around the abdomen, upper middle sides as well as the lower waist. If you have taper hips, you may try to accessorize the dress with a delicate belt.
Empire Waist Off Shoulder Dresses
This pattern accentuates your chest and it looks good on every body, it's all about being able to carry it off with confidence and style. These look best in long flowing dress patterns, though you can also try short dresses and tops that have been fashionably tailored. The off shoulder kimono pattern using plain colors such as gray or black give the high fashion edgy look. Add on the stockings and the pumps, and you will be as good as a diva in your own right.
Corset Dresses
You may even give corset tops and similar patterns a try as they make your stomach look flatter and accentuate the chest and the shoulders. The corset off shoulder dresses come in a range of lengths, varying from mini length to ankle lengths. You can even try wearing these tops with jeans or short symmetrical skirts along with broad belts.
There are many more patterns that are available, though it is up to you to select the best-off-shoulder-dress for yourself. They can be worn for special outings, dinner date, for partying as well as for formal cocktail events and weddings. The reason for their popularity is very simple, they make women look attractive and allow them to dress up differently as compared to their usual attires.
