How to Recover from a Breakup
A breakup can be a tragic and traumatic experience for the people involved in the relationship. Well, I am not really referring to the "I am so drunk one night stands" but rather to those significant relationships or the marriage relations which have turned sour over a period of time. The breakup of a long term committed relationship can be devastating even in abusive relationships or when the relationship has been on rocky grounds for quite some time. This is because ending a relationship also means bidding farewell to shared dreams and commitments made in one.
Most romantic relations begin on a high note where the excitement of the romance fuels the dreams and hopes for the future. When these fail to materialize, there is a feeling of utter grief and disappointment. Moreover, you usually move into a space where everything is disrupted right from your normal routine to your relations with your extended family and in some cases to even your identity. Let's now try and find you solutions that can teach you how to recover from a breakup.
Getting over a relationship breakup is the most difficult part. While most people keep hanging on with a false sense of hopefulness, others are stuck with the idea of getting back to their ex even after ending a relationship. However, it is important that while recovering from a breakup, you be patient and allow yourself the time to understand the whirlwind of emotions. Here are a few ways that will help you understand as to how to recover from a breakup.
Surviving a Breakup
Cry Your Heart Out: You need that essential 24 hour mope where you can cry to your heart's content and just lounge around in the house munching on your favorite chocolates. Okay, that really was an exaggeration. What I meant was the best way to recover from grief is to understand that it is all right to feel the way you do. Conflicting emotions and the feelings of anger, resentment, sadness, fear, and confusion are normal. Just understand these feelings and acknowledge them, as little do you know, but one of the best ways of how to handle a breakup is to cry your heart out, as each tear that is shed helps you shed that much grief. Suppressing the pain can only result in prolonging the pain of the heartbreak. After all it is best to see the writing on the wall for what it is rather than sitting down and pondering over it.
Build a Support Group: When you are going through the worst phases of your life, your friends and family will be there to support you and help you tide over this bad phase. There is nothing like a caring ear that provides you with the support you need. Also, spending time with your loved ones will help you feel loved and wanted.
Destroy Memorabilia from the Past: You may be trapped in a state of limbo and under an illusion, hoping that the relationship will mend itself. However, it is best to get over it and the best ways of doing so is to destroy or rather let go of the things that remind you of the relationship.
Get Busy: Get over the "dreamy" part and do something to keep yourself busy. Take this time to explore new interests and pursue fun activities which you always wanted to do, but were busy taking your girlfriend out for a dinner or going to a senseless baseball game with your boyfriend that you were probably never interested in, in the first place. Once you focus on something that you enjoy it will be easier to get over the trauma of the breakup.
Meet New People: Even though a breakup might seem like the end of the world, it is not so, isolation after breakup just does not work. Some people feel that they might have lost their support group with the breakup. So it is time to get social again by either joining a social networking club, taking up language classes, volunteering or getting involved in community activities. With new relationships there is always the hope of healing a broken heart.
Remember that however paralyzed with grief you may be at the moment, this is just a temporary phase of your life that will soon get over. Just give it time and day by day, little by little, this ordeal will soon be over and moving on after a breakup will be easier for you. A breakup is never good for the heart, but following these simple ways of how to recover from a breakup will make your life a lot less stressful.
