To fray a denim skirt, first you need to gather a few materials. You also need to consider how much length of the skirt you want to fray. Just make sure that you do not cut it too short as the fabric tends to unravel too much and you will be left with a very short denim skirt! Materials required
  • A pair of scissors
  • Small nail scissor
  • Denim skirt
  • Fine grit sandpaper (optional)
  • Embroidery thread
  • Needle
Method

First wear the denim skirt and mark the length where you want the fraying to start. Now place the denim skirt on a table and cut off the existing hem with a pair of scissors. Make sure that you cut the hemline uniformly with the scissor. Now make a jagged cut with the nail scissors where you had marked the skirt to signify the start point of the fraying. With the pointed end of the scissors, start pulling out the fibers of the denim. You can also use a fine grit sandpaper to create a more distressed look. Unravel the horizontal fibers from the fabric from the base and discard them. Keep on unraveling the fibers until you reach the point where you had marked it. Now sew the edge of the denim skirt with a needle and embroidery thread so that the denim fibers do not unravel any more than the marked length.

If you have a sewing machine, you can sew the hem of the skirt in the machine. This will save you time and labor. Finally you have to wash the denim skirt in the washing machine and dry it. This gives the fraying a softer and organic look. Your frayed denim skirt is ready and you can wear it with a T-shirt or a cool white shirt.

Fraying and distressing a denim skirt in this way gives it a whole new look. Add some embellishments in the form of buttons and sequins and you will have your own unique piece of clothing. Now that you know how to fray a denim skirt, you can transform your plain and boring skirt into a rock chic one.
