Appliance Paint

You must have noticed, how, after a few years, kitchen appliances looks old and boring. The color fades and the shiny coat that made it look brand new has scratch marks on them. If the appliance works fine, then it simply does not make sense to replace the home appliance because it has lost its shine and sheen. But the fact is, such an appliance becomes an eyesore in the kitchen, making your kitchen look old and shabby. A good solution for this would be to apply a coat of paint over it. Appliance paint is a paint that is specially formulated for use over appliances. Ordinary interior based paint cannot be applied over appliances since they do not adhere well and they are likely to peel off very soon, even if they do adhere to the surface of the appliance. Appliance paint are generally of two varieties, the brush on variety where you can use a brush to apply it, or the spray variety which is very easy to use.

How to Use Paint for Appliances

Applying paint is a very cheap option to match the colors of your appliances with your interiors, as well as to make old appliances look new. But not all kitchen appliances can be coated with appliance paint. High temperature emanating appliances like range tops, ovens, hobs and stoves should not be painted with appliance paint since the paint will just melt off, and cause damage to the appliances. Some appliances like refrigerator, food processors, dishwashers and microwave ovens are ideal for application of this paint. Before you apply a coat of paint on any appliance, it is important for you to choose a formulation that works for you. Also read the instructions given at the back of the paint container to know about the compatibility of the paint with the appliance you are painting.

Painting your Appliance

Before you start painting your appliance, you need to choose paint colors. Choose a color that matches the interiors of the kitchen and also decide whether you want a spray on paint or a brush on paint. For painting the entire appliance, a spray on appliance paint works well. However, if you just want to camouflage nicks and scratches, then a brush on paint will suffice. Once you are done deciding on the color and formulation of the paint, you need to prepare the appliance for painting it.

Clean the appliance thoroughly with diluted white vinegar to remove all dust, dirt and grime. Pay special attention to nooks and crannies which are filled with grime. If there is any rust, then you need to apply a special product that will prevent it further. Now let the appliance dry completely and take it out to the porch or balcony where you can paint it without creating a mess. This also helps to dry the appliance and create proper ventilation. Spread old newspapers around the appliance to protect the floor. Next, shake the can of spray paint and start spray painting the appliance in an even coat. Work from one corner to another and make sure that you hold the can of appliance paint at least a foot away. Apply two to three coats for maximum coverage and protection. Allow it to dry for over 24 hours before taking it back to the kitchen.

This was all about applying paint to an old appliance. You can also use stainless steel appliance paint to make any appliance look like it has been made with stainless steel. When you are remodeling a kitchen on a budget, appliance paint can help you to keep the cost down.
