Furniture Painting Techniques
Painting furniture is a simple and easy method that can improve the appearance of an old piece of furniture. At the same time, painted furniture can enhance the overall interior decorating of the house. The furniture in our homes are mostly made up different materials. Giving a uniform look to all of them is quite a challenging task. You can achieve this by using some furniture painting techniques
Furniture Painting Ideas
The techniques of painting given here are nothing but some interesting ideas to decorate the furniture and make them attractive. Some of the most popular painting techniques that gives a unique look to the furniture are as follows:
Antique Look: In this method, efforts are made to achieve an antique furniture look. A number of layers of paint is used for this kind of effect. This can be created by applying a number of layers of paint. You can use three different colors of paint for this purpose. Apply the first coat of paint and let it dry up completely. Then apply the second coat with a different paint color. When the second coat is dry, then sand some of the surfaces of the furniture to reveal the underlying paint. For instance, on a chair the arms lose maximum color. Therefore, you can sand the arms of the chair. Use the third paint color only in some small areas like the edges as signs of aging. Selection of right kind of color combination is very important for this purpose. Instead of any bright color, use some muted colors.
Shabby Look: As the name suggests, a worn out, distressed look is given to the furniture. Application of glaze will help you to accomplish this look. First of all, you have to apply an oil based paint to form the base coat. For this you can choose any light color like off white, pale yellow or pink. Once this paint has dried up properly, the glaze paint is applied. Usually shades of brown are chosen. A glaze is prepared by diluting a water based paint by mixing some water into it. Apply the first coat of glaze all over the newly painted furniture and let it dry for some time. Then take a soft piece of cloth, damp it lightly and rub it over the glaze. The traces of glaze that are collected into the curves and crevices will show the aging effect. After the first coat if you find that the glaze is not noticeable, then you can add more number of coats.
Bold Look: When you are ready to experiment with the look of the furniture, then you have several options available with you. You can use three different shades of the same color and use them in various parts of the furniture. Keep the light shades on the easily visible parts and darker tones for the corner areas of the furniture. You can use bright neon colors of various shades for a bold look. Paint the legs of the furniture with a color which is contrast to the color of the seat and back of the chair. Give a unique look to the front of the dresser by painting different colors on each of the drawers. Another idea is to keep a strong base color on which multi-colored images of various shapes and sizes are painted. Use latex paint pens or stencils to create such designs.
Hope these furniture painting techniques help you to get a brief idea on what to expect from the paint job. You should always use your creative mind to come up with more interesting furniture painting ideas that suit your taste. Finally, I would like to give you some furniture painting tips. While painting the furniture, start working from the top and move downwards. It is advisable to use a primer before application of the paint, as it helps the paint adhere well to the surface. Keep the work area well ventilated or else you may feel suffocated. Cover the floor of the work area with old newspapers or drop cloths to protect it from dripping paint.
